Maafushi Island – Gateway to Local Maldivian Life
Located just 27 kilometers from Malé, Maafushi is one of the most prominent inhabited islands in the Kaafu Atoll and a pioneer of local tourism in the Maldives. Slightly over 1 kilometer in length and approximately 265 meters wide, the island is home to around 2,700 residents and offers a unique glimpse into authentic Maldivian culture.
Maafushi gained recognition in 2012 as the starting point of local island tourism in the country. Today, it stands as a vibrant hub with essential infrastructure including shops, local markets, a central mosque, a school, a football field, and an administrative office. The island’s laid-back charm, budget-friendly guesthouses, and easy accessibility from Malé make it a top choice for travelers seeking both cultural immersion and beachside relaxation.
